Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, has signed a strategic partnership with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop green hydrogen and renewable energy projects in India.

The JV, on a 50:50 partnership basis, is a strong step by the two firms to promote India’s dream of turning into an international hub of green hydrogen and curbing carbon emissions in hard-to-abate industries.

The business, that was made last September, intends to pursue production, operation and marketing of renewable energy and green energy and green hydrogen and its derivatives as green ammonia. The bunkering opportunity like green fuel options would be pursued by JV as well apart from reducing carbon in ports.

“The prospects would tap into Sembcorp’s strong renewables experience along with BPCL’s petrochem business knowhow and infrastructure network,” a joint statement given out by the two companies mentioned.

Vipul Tuli, President & CEO of Renewables & CEO of Sembcorp Hydrogen Business said, “Sembcorp’s partnership with BPCL is set to accelerate the growth of green hydrogen and renewable energy in India. With Sembcorp’s renewables capability and BPCL’s petroleum capability, we are eager to unlock potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries.”

Sembcorp, with its current 6 GW of renewable energy assets in India, is increasingly turning towards the use of green hydrogen and green ammonia as one of the primary decarbonisation pathways. The firm hopes to enable mass-scale, low-cost production of green hydrogen to meet growing demand.

    G. Krishnakumar, BPCL Chairman & Managing Director, said, “BPCL will take advantage of its ambitions, core strengths, and capabilities to build innovation-driven, best-in-class green and renewable hydrogen solutions. This aligns with India’s ambitious climate ambitions as well as BPCL’s 2040 net-zero emissions vision under Scope 1 and 2.”

This JV will play a pivotal role in making India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission possible, driving energy security, sustainability, and the transition of the nation to the low-carbon economy.
