    A study finds UK businesses lose thousands annually to energy-draining appliances

    A new study by Sustain Commercial Solar has revealed that UK businesses are losing thousands of pounds each year due to ‘vampire appliances’—devices that continue consuming electricity even when not actively in use.

    According to the research, small businesses with 10-15 employees may waste over £900 annually, while larger corporate offices with 100+ employees could see energy losses exceeding £6,900 per year. With energy prices expected to increase by 6.4% in April 2025, businesses of all sizes may soon face even higher costs.

    The Biggest Energy Drainers in Offices

    The study identified the top 10 worst energy-draining appliances for small businesses (approximately 15 employees), revealing the hidden costs of standby power consumption:

    • HVAC systems – Up to £1,182.60 per year
    • Office lighting & signage – Adds £486 to annual bills
    • Computers & laptops – Consumes £630 annually
    • Printers – Costs approximately £157.68 per year
    • Game consoles & digital displays – Responsible for £157.68 per year in losses
    • Fridges & freezers – Wastes £354.87 annually
    • Phone systems – Adds £473.04 to bills
    • Smart TVs & display screens – Contributes £212.87 per year
    • Coffee machines – A hidden cost of £35.48 annually
    • Microwaves – Draining approximately £248.35 each year when left plugged in

    Cutting Energy Waste & Saving Costs

    Jani Moran, Commercial Director at Sustain Commercial Solar, commented on the findings:

    “Many businesses are unknowingly spending thousands on energy they’re not even using. This study highlights a huge opportunity for cost savings with minimal effort.”

    To combat energy waste, businesses can adopt three key strategies:

    1. Encouraging employees to switch off non-essential devices at the end of the workday.
    2. Switching to LED lighting for improved energy efficiency.
    3. Upgrading to smart HVAC systems and energy-efficient office devices to reduce standby power consumption.

    However, one of the most impactful solutions is investing in on-site solar power generation. By turning to solar power, companies can shift their dependence on grid electricity, stabilize prices, and contribute to sustainability.

    A Call to Action: Sustainable Business Practices
