Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, is set to commence operations of its solar photovoltaic (PV) module factory in 2025. This initiative is part of RIL’s broader strategy to bolster India’s renewable energy infrastructure and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Partha S. Maitra, President of Strategy and Initiatives at RIL, confirmed the development, stating, “We are today building three bigger factories… in order to produce clean energy requirements.”

    Ambitious Capacity Targets

The upcoming factory aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 20 gigawatts (GW) of solar modules. This significant output positions RIL to contribute approximately 14% of the global solar PV module production outside of China.

The factory is part of the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat. It is considered a completely integrated renewable energy generation campus, with plants for manufacturing photovoltaic panels, energy storage complexes, green hydrogen facilities, electrolyzers, and fuel cell networks.

    Enabling India’s Clean Energy Aspirations

India plans to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2030. RIL’s entire solar module manufacturing facility will be one of the key support facilities for the country to realize this vision. The bid to increase the renewable energy capacity of the country has intensified, particularly after disappointing earlier targets in 2022.

By investing in local production of solar modules, RIL will insulate India from over-reliance on imports and place the country firmly in the global renewable energy space.

    Future Plans for Expansion

In addition to solar modules, RIL will diversify its clean energy business further. RIL will begin production at its battery and micro power electronics facility in the next year. All these plans are in line with RIL’s larger vision for sustainable energy solutions and innovation.

Reliance Industries entry into the production of solar modules is a big move for India’s renewable energy era. Aimed to clock 20 GW of capacity every year, RIL will be a player to be watched in the global solar PV industry. Not only does it reinforce India’s vision of clean energy, but it also indicates RIL’s push towards sustainable growth and innovation.
