In a rather unexpected move, the new flag bearer of the electric vehicle market in India is not the much-anticipated Creta Electric from Hyundai. It’s the MG Windsor EV, with more than 3,000 units sold in a month for four continuous months. The ongoing run of success has placed the Windsor EV at one of the main contenders in the increasingly widening Indian EV market.

    Dominance in Electric Segment

In December 2024, the MG Windsor EV exceeded all expectations and became India’s best-selling electric car. The latest numbers released by JSW MG Motor India show that the Windsor EV maintained its lead with sales of 3,785 units. These numbers are part of the larger narrative, where in just three months, the Windsor has sold over 10,000 units and hence unfolded its dominating market presence.

    Affordability and Features

What puts the Windsor EV a cut above the rest is not merely sales, but rather the value proposition: for between Rs 13.50 lakh and Rs 15.50 lakh (ex-showroom), it comes with a claimed range of 332km (ARAI-certified) on a single full charge. For those looking to further reduce upfront costs, there’s the BaaS model that allows buyers to own the vehicle for Rs 9.99 lakh with an additional Rs 3.5 per kilometre for battery rental. This has made electric vehicles more accessible, explaining part of their market success.

    Feature-Rich Cabin

It comes with a feature-loaded cabin, which has been a major attraction for buyers, making it so popular. This car does not have a direct competitor in its class, differentiating it from more affordable electric offerings such as the Tata Tiago.ev, Tata Punch.ev, Tata Nexon.ev, Tata Curvv.ev, Mahindra XUV400, and Citroen E-C3.

    Impact on JSW MG’s Performance

December was a very good month for JSW MG Motor India, with overall sales of 7,516 units, up 55% year over year. More than 70% of these sales were accounted for by the Windsor EV alone, underlining its role in the company’s success.

The MG Windsor EV embodies the potential for the market for electric vehicles in India to grow. With less than 3% EV penetration in the total car sales of India, the success of Windsor may just be able to convince more consumers to adopt electric vehicles and help drive the country toward its transition to sustainable transport.
