Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Monday that the state has set a target to replace 3,000 petrol and diesel vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) this year. Addressing the All India Motor Transport Congress ‘National Truck and Bus Meet’ held in Solan district, Sukhu underlined the government’s commitment to providing clean and green transport, benefiting not only residents but also the millions of tourists who visit the state annually.
Phased Introduction of E-Buses and Expansion of Green Corridors
Highlighting major initiatives, the Chief Minister noted that the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has already floated tenders for purchasing 297 electric buses, at an investment of ₹412 crore. An additional ₹124 crore is being spent on setting up EV charging stations at major bus depots.
“In 2025-26, we plan to procure 500 more e-buses,” Sukhu stated. He further revealed that six green corridors have already been established, and 41 new charging stations are soon to be installed across the state.
Tax Benefits and Subsidies to Boost E-Vehicle Adoption
In a bid to make EVs more accessible, the government is offering 100% exemption on road tax and a 50% reduction on the special road tax for e-commercial vehicles. “We are not just promoting electric mobility but also creating self-employment opportunities,” Sukhu said.
Permits for 1,000 new bus routes are being offered to the private sector, with subsidies of up to 40% on the purchase of electric buses and tempo travellers, aimed at encouraging youth participation in the green economy.
Rajiv Gandhi Swarozgar Startup Yojana: Empowering Youth Through E-Taxis
The Chief Minister also spoke about the newly launched ₹680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Swarozgar Startup Yojana, under which youth are provided a 50% subsidy for purchasing e-taxis. These taxis are being integrated into various government departments, corporations, and institutions.
“Under the e-taxi scheme, 50 e-taxis have already been attached to government departments, and 50 more will be approved before May 10,” he informed.
Himachal Pradesh’s Vision: A Green Energy State by 2026
Sukhu reiterated the state government’s broader goal: to make Himachal Pradesh a Green Energy State by March 2026. As part of the first phase, all government offices in Hamirpur, the Chief Minister’s home district, will exclusively use electric vehicles.
Himachal Pradesh, known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant tourism, is now aiming to ensure that its natural beauty is preserved through sustainable practices. Strengthening tourism infrastructure while focusing on environmental protection remains a priority, Sukhu added.
