Guwahati, January 15, 2026: Assam has declared a radical strategy of producing 3,500 megawatts (MW) of solar energy by 2030, which is a huge leap in changing the state towards clean and sustainable energy. The roadmap was disclosed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who emphasized the increased attention of Assam to developing renewable energy sources.

The existing Solar Capacity and Recent Addition

As more solar plants are commissioned, solar capacity in Assam has increased to approximately 680 MW, and the capacity is projected to increase to 750 MW by April 2026 as more plants come online. One of the major developments in this growth is the 70 MW solar power station at Khudigaon in Dhubri district, which was made in collaboration with SJVN Green Energy Limited and Assam Power Development Corporation Limited (APDCL).

Strategy to Achieve the 2030 Goal

To achieve the target of 3,500 MW, the state government intends to use the untapped and vacated government land to develop solar mega parks. According to the officials, such a method will not only lower the obstacles to land acquisition, but will also create local jobs. The government is as well promoting the involvement of the private sector by supporting the policies and accelerating the speed at which the projects can be approved.

Pay attention to Rooftop and Decentralised Solar.

Assam will also facilitate rooftop solar-powered buildings, institutions and urban infrastructure in addition to utility-scale projects. The solar systems should be decentralised to enhance access to energy, particularly in areas that are remote and prone to flooding within the state.

    Conformity to National Climate Goals.

The solar push is in line with overall renewable energy and climate commitments in India, which are to decrease the reliance on fossil fuels and carbon emissions. Upon completing the 3,500 MW goal, the energy security of Assam will be considerably increased besides ensuring a cleaner power mix.

The project makes Assam one of the emerging players in the renewable energy of India.
