Xylem Inc., a leading global water technology company, has announced a significant environmental milestone in its latest Sustainability Report. Since 2019, Xylem’s technologies have enabled the reuse of 18.1 billion cubic meters of water, enough to meet the annual needs of over 350 million people, based on global water use averages.
This achievement is part of Xylem’s broader push to drive water sustainability, improve infrastructure resilience, and combat climate challenges through cutting-edge technology and digital innovation.
Advanced Technology Driving Global Water Reuse
Xylem’s efforts span continents, industries, and ecosystems. The company’s advanced solutions, from smart monitoring to wastewater treatment, are helping utilities and businesses reuse water, reduce leaks, lower emissions, and protect vital resources.
In one example, a global spirits producer in the United States adopted Xylem’s systems to reuse over 3,785 cubic meters of water annually. In Spain, a provincial water utility utilized Xylem’s predictive analytics to prevent two major pipeline failures and save 25,000 cubic meters of water each year.
Preventing Pollution and Reducing Emissions
The report also highlights that Xylem’s technologies helped customers:
- Prevent 10.7 billion cubic meters of polluted water from contaminating natural waterways
- Reduce non-revenue water by 3.7 billion cubic meters
- Cut carbon emissions by more than 6.4 million metric tons of CO₂e
In Eastern Europe, a major food processor upgraded to Xylem’s smart aeration tech, slashing energy usage by 33%.
New Target: Cut Water Demand by 2 Billion Cubic Meters Annually by 2030
Having met its 2025 Customer Sustainability Goals ahead of time, Xylem has now set a new ambition: to help customers reduce annual water demand by 2 billion cubic meters by 2030.
“Our customers are tackling the world’s toughest water challenges,” stated Matthew Pine, President and CEO of Xylem. “Their success reflects the power of scaling proven technologies to secure our water future.”
Empowering Communities Through Clean Water and Sanitation
Xylem’s impact extends beyond technology. In 2024, 43% of its supplier spending supported partners aligned with WASH4Work, a global initiative promoting access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Claudia Toussaint, Xylem’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized, “Sustainability isn’t just a goal, it’s embedded in our operations. We’re enabling customers to create lasting impact, while strengthening our market position.”
