Vietnamese motor company VinFast is preparing to enter the already saturated Indian electric scooter market with scooters designed to meet the needs of domestic consumers.
The company hopes to launch its first two-wheelers sometime in the second half of 2026, and the festive season appears to be a good time for the firm to launch them.
Made in Tamil Nadu
VinFast already has a factory in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, where it assembles electric SUVs such as the VF6 and VF7. Another product the plant is dealing with is the future Limo Green electric MPV.
Vinfast is expanding the car assembly line to accommodate 1.5 lakh units annually. However, the business’s primary focus will be on the two-wheeler segment.
Vinfast has decided to establish a manufacturing line specifically to produce scooters within the same premises. The objective is high: 10 lakh units annually. Such capability is an indication of a grave interest in contending with the market leaders.
In Progress India-Specific Products
Pham Sanh Chau, Vinfast Asia CEO, said the company will develop scooters in India rather than just import its global models. Rather, it is about developing products tailored to India’s conditions.
The team is investigating the local infrastructure, how people use scooters in this town, price sensitivity, and competitor offerings. This grassroots strategy would help Vinfast strike competitive prices that are sensitive to Indian buyers.
Localisation Push Underway
Vinfast has already discussed with Indian suppliers the possibility of sourcing components in India. The localisation of battery packs, motors, and body parts is all on the table.
The company could also take advantage of government incentive programmes such as PLI and PM E-DRIVE to further reduce costs. There is an increase in local content, which normally translates into lower prices and high margins.
Tough Competition Ahead
The market for Indian electric scooters has expanded faster than some had predicted. VinFast will face stiff competition from Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather Energy, and many other players already competing to capture market share.
However, with a million-unit-capacity plant producing India-targeted products, Vinfast is obviously not here to play small. The showrooms may witness some interesting action during the festive season of 2026.
