Toyota has finally revealed its first mass-market electric SUV for India. The company released a teaser video this week, confirming what many had been waiting for. The electric SUV will make its global debut on January 19, 2026.
This unveiling comes just days after Maruti Suzuki showcased its own version, the e-Vitara. Both vehicles share the same underpinnings, but Toyota has gone its own way with the design.
What the Teaser shows
The short video offers a clear look at the front end. Toyota has stayed close to the Urban SUV Concept shown last year. The face looks nothing like the Maruti version.
Slim LED daytime running lights stretch across the top, connected by a light bar or chrome strip. Below sits a blacked-out grille, standard fare for electric cars these days. The bumper looks chunky and has a skid plate at the bottom. New alloy wheels round out the changes from its Maruti sibling.
Two Battery Options
Both cars ride on the HEARTECT-e platform that Toyota and Suzuki built together. Buyers will be able to choose between two battery sizes.
The smaller 49 kWh pack should deliver around 400 km of range. Those who want more can opt for the 61 kWh battery, which promises over 500 km on a full charge.
Entry-level models will send power only to the front wheels. Higher trims will get all-wheel drive with two motors. This setup should help on rough roads and provide better grip in wet conditions.
Inside the Cabin
Toyota hasn’t shown the interior yet, but expect something similar to the e-Vitara, with different badging and seat materials.
The feature list should include two screens up front, ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and wireless phone charging. The safety kit will likely include a 360-degree camera, an electronic parking brake, and Level 2 driver-assistance tech like adaptive cruise control.
Price and Competition
Toyota will build the Urban Cruiser EV at Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat. Prices should fall somewhere between ₹20 lakh and ₹25 lakh before road tax.
That puts it up against some tough competition. The Tata Curvv.ev is already on sale. The MG ZS EV has been around for a while now. And Hyundai is bringing the Creta EV soon. Then there’s the Maruti e-Vitara itself, which will compete for the same customers.
Toyota has been hesitant to enter the EV market in India. This launch marks a big step for the company. Deliveries should start sometime after the price announcement later this year.
