Svante Technologies Inc., a global pioneer in carbon capture and removal, has officially commissioned the world’s first gigafactory dedicated to manufacturing commercial-scale carbon capture filters. Known as the Redwood Centre of Excellence for Carbon Capture and Removal, the facility was launched at the company’s grand opening event “GO25,” held in Burnaby, British Columbia.
The Redwood facility marks a major milestone in the global effort to combat climate change. With a total floor space of 141,000 square feet, this advanced manufacturing site is capable of producing enough solid sorbent-based filters to capture up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, an amount equal to removing 27 million cars from the road.
A Leap Toward Scalable Climate Tech Manufacturing
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Claude Letourneau, President & CEO of Svante Group, emphasized the importance of scaling carbon management technologies.
“Today, we are making history. This gigafactory is a critical step forward in building the infrastructure necessary to scale up the carbon management industry and build a marketplace for physical CO₂,” Letourneau stated.
The factory’s innovative production line leverages automation and standardization to drive down manufacturing costs and enable mass deployment of Svante’s patented filters. These filters utilize metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a cutting-edge material known for its high surface area and selectivity, to capture CO₂ directly from industrial emissions and the atmosphere.
Supporting Carbon Removal in Key Industries
Svante is focusing on biogenic carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sectors such as pulp and paper, ethanol production, and waste-to-energy, where CO₂ concentrations are higher and capture costs lower. However, the company is also targeting harder-to-abate industries like cement, steel, and fossil fuels, crucial to achieving net-zero targets globally.
Letourneau added,
“We’re proud to launch this transformative manufacturing facility in Canada, bringing the supply chain to our shores and moving carbon management closer to where it’s needed most”
Backed by Global Industry Leaders
The launch follows a US$145 million investment and is supported by major global players, including Chevron New Energies, United Airlines Ventures, Samsung, GE Vernova, Temasek, M&G, and the Canada Growth Fund. Svante envisions more gigafactories like Redwood coming online over the next decade to meet soaring market demand for carbon removal technologies.
Proven Technology with Real-World Impact
Svante’s carbon capture technology is already being deployed in pilot projects across North America. These include installations at Chevron’s Kern River site in California and the Project CO2MENT collaboration with Lafarge Holcim at a cement plant in Richmond, British Columbia. Additionally, Svante manufactures filters for Climeworks’ Gen 3 Direct Air Capture (DAC) units, which claim to double CO₂ capture capacity while halving energy costs.
Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future
With its flagship gigafactory now operational, Svante has positioned itself as a global leader in scalable carbon management solutions. The Redwood Facility not only demonstrates commercial viability but also builds confidence among investors, customers, and governments in the company’s vision of a decarbonized future.
