A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been signed to increase the size of rooftop solar power in the capital. The project will mount solar systems on 244 civic buildings of NDMC in Delhi.

    Rooftop Solar for Public Infrastructure

The project will focus on government buildings, community buildings, and facilities. These roofs will produce solar power. The move will reduce reliance on outdated energy and reduce expenses on energy to NDMC.

Funding for Clean Energy and Grid Support

The solar installations will minimize carbon emission. They will also serve the power station of Delhi when the demand is high. Decentralized generation will enhance the local energy security as well as the utilization of renewable energy in dense cities.

    The experience of SECI

SECI also contributes high technical competency to the joint venture. The agency has already contracted over 25 GW of solar PV power in India. SECI will aid in planning, implementation, and coordination to have everything realized on time.

The project aids India in the idea of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power by 2030. Solar on rooftops in government facilities is very important in fulfilling the climate and clean energy promises.

    A Model for Other Cities

SECI-NDMC is a good example of what other municipal bodies should follow. It gives an idea on how a transition can be led by the public institutions that can transform India into a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
