Renewable energy derived from sun, wind, water, biomass, and geothermal heat is changing the world’s energy and Indian energy scene. Countries are trying to reduce their carbon emissions to reach climate goals and the most critical component for economic growth, sustainability and energy security is clean energy
Global Renewables Milestones
In 2025, renewables began creating more electricity than coal for the first time worldwide, mainly due to sharply increasing outputs from solar and wind. The 83% of the rise in electricity demand was met by solar alone and there was a slight decline in coal use in 2023.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that solar PV and wind power will continue to lead the energy transition as their share of global electricity output rises sharply by 2026
India’s Successes in Renewable Energy.
India has made a significant progress in renewables. The country installed around 44.5 GW of renewable capacity in 2025, the highest ever in a year. The growth resulted in over 51 percent of India’s total installed power capacity being made up by non-fossils five years ahead of the climate target.
Recently, power generation capacity underwent a remarkable increase, primarily driven by renewable energy sources. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are top solar states.
Renewable energy output increased 24.4% year-on-year to 134.43 billion kWh in the first half of 2025, the fastest growth in three years, as wind and solar generation ramped up.
India aims to achieve a total installed renewable energy capacity of about 500 GW by 2030, with a 250,000 MW solar energy target set by 2028.
Emerging Trends & Future Outlook
Investments in renewables are soaring. For instance, IREDA (Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency) shares shot up after reporting a strong jump in financial performance in its quarterly result.
Gujarat’s Kutch region will reportedly house one of the world’s largest renewable energy hubs. The Adani Group’s plan for this facility is worth ₹1.5 lakh crore, which will be a huge private investment.
The ability of useful energy to be replenished through human efforts makes them renewable gods. In order to maintain this momentum for the years ahead, policy support and Infrastructure development need to continue.
