ReNew Power, a leading renewable energy company in India, has announced a substantial investment of ₹22,000 crore to establish the country’s largest renewable energy complex in Andhra Pradesh. This ambitious project marks ReNew’s return to the state after a five-year hiatus.
The planned complex in Anantapur district will encompass a 1,800 MW solar power plant, a 1,000 MW wind energy facility, and a 2 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The development will occur in two phases, with the first phase including 587 MW of solar capacity, a 250.8 MW wind project, and a 415 MWh BESS.
Enhancing Power Infrastructure
To facilitate the flow of clean energy, ReNew Power will build a 100-kilometer extra-high voltage (EHV) transmission line. The plant is significant for effectively transferring the generated renewable power to the national grid.
The project groundbreaking ceremony is held on May 16 and will be presided over by Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Information Technology, Electronics, Communications, and Human Resources Development.
Policy Changes Attract Investment
This massive investment comes after the Andhra Pradesh government released a new integrated clean energy policy in October 2024. The policy has been designed to attract renewable energy investment and reduce approvals for projects.
The state government had, earlier in 2019, reviewed and revised the power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy firms, impacting some 5.2 GW of wind and solar projects. This had slowed down the growth in renewable energy in the state.
With this policy now implemented, ReNew Power’s comeback is an indication of increased confidence in the determination of Andhra Pradesh to facilitate sustainable energy growth.
Accelerating India’s Renewable Targets
ReNew Power’s project is in line with India’s larger desire to enhance its renewable energy capacity. Bringing together solar, wind, and battery storage technologies in one complex is a giant leap towards ensuring energy security and curbing carbon emissions.
The project will generate employment on a large scale and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
