Hyundai Mobis, the auto parts arm of Hyundai Motor Group, has developed a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) battery safety system designed to automatically discharge fire suppressants in case of a battery cell ignition. The system aims to stop thermal runaway at its source, a critical step forward in enhancing EV safety.
The new battery technology integrates a heat-resistant structure and a fire suppression device directly into the battery casing. The system activates in response to abnormal heat or ignition, automatically releasing a suppressant to prevent fire from spreading to adjacent cells. Hyundai Mobis confirmed that both domestic and international patents have been filed for this innovation, which is yet to be commercialised anywhere globally.
“This is a first-of-its-kind system engineered not just to delay heat and flame spread, but to intervene at the ignition point itself,” the company stated.
Park Yong-jun, vice president of the battery system research division at Hyundai Mobis, said: “As more large EVs with extended range hit the roads, the need for advanced battery safety systems is more critical than ever. Our goal is to set global standards by integrating software and hardware innovations.”
The announcement coincides with Hyundai Mobis’ recent participation in the Mobis Mobility Day event held in Detroit. This annual mobility tech show, now in its fourth year, spotlighted the company’s advancements in software-defined vehicles (SDVs), electrification, and electronic components.
Over 200 stakeholders, including representatives from major North American automakers and tech startups, attended the event. Engineers and researchers from Hyundai Mobis’ North American R&D center presented their roadmap for future mobility solutions and discussed strategic collaborations.
With North America accounting for a significant portion of recent global orders, Hyundai Mobis is intensifying its partnerships with local startups to co-develop cutting-edge EV components and improve responsiveness to regional market demands.
By aligning next-gen battery technology with global mobility trends, Hyundai Mobis continues to reinforce its position as a leader in the EV innovation ecosystem.
