Hindustan Power is breaking into the solar market in India. On April 3, 2025, it has come out on top for a 425 MWp solar energy project floated by Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL). This victory adds to its list for clean energy.
A Solar Triumph
Hindustan Power emerged as the successful participant in the 425 MWp project through an open bidding. It was UPPACL’s 2,000 MW AC grid-connected solar PV auction. UPPCL will buy power on fixed tariff power purchase agreement (PPA) for 25 years. “This win further strengthens our commitment towards India’s vision of clean energy and working towards our target of 5GW of renewable energy by 2028,” said Ratul Puri, chairman, Hindustan Power. The plant will be operational in 24 months from signing of PPA.
Why It Matters
The addition strengthens the renewable power capacity of Uttar Pradesh. This also helps in aiding India’s goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Hindustan Power, as a very experienced solar developer, already has a proven track record. The company commissioned India’s first 5 MW capacity solar power plant and Asia’s first 30 MW capacity solar farm, as stated on its website. Having entrusted over 550 MW of ground-based solar projects, this 425 MWp capacity expansion is a record achievement.
- Project Size: 425 MWp solar power project.
- Auction: UPPCL’s 2,000 MW AC grid-connected solar PV auction.
- Timeline: Committed in 24 months of signing PPA.
- Company Goal: 5 GW of renewable capacity by 2028.
Hindustan Power’s Legacy
Hindustan Power is clean on the renewables front. It has 162 MW solar projects on its clean energy wing, reports hindustanpowerprojects.com. It’s operational on the global platform too, with a solar capacity of over 120 MW in Germany, Italy, the UK, and the US, reports Wikipedia. It’s planning to commission India’s first 1 GW solar power facility by end-2016, though subject to an IPO towards later 2014 or early-2015.
Challenges Ahead
Not a cakewalk constructing a 425 MWp facility. Land acquisition, clearances, and grid connection are time-consuming. Delay in supply, such as availability of solar panels, could also emerge. But then Hindustan Power has that expertise to its credit. From conception to commissioning, the company’s own EPC division does it all, so handover is a breeze.
Uttar Pradesh is going solar big time. Hindustan Power’s achievement is a part of India’s larger clean energy drive. India added 25.2 GW of solar capacity in 2024, according to a report by Mercom, reflecting the pace of the industry. The project will reduce emissions and light up houses with clean power.
Hindustan Power’s 425 MWp solar power plant is Uttar Pradesh’s beacon of hope. With a 25-year PPA and a fixed schedule, the company is lighting up India’s solar renewable future solar farm by solar farm.
