Odisha is set to become a key player in the global green energy revolution. HIF Global India, a subsidiary of Chile’s HIF Latam, expressed interest in investing around $1 billion in the state’s renewable energy sector. The company, a world leader in methanol synthesis, operates in countries like the USA, Uruguay, Australia, and Chile. It is keen to establish a cutting-edge electro-fuel (e-fuel) production facility in Odisha to meet the rising global demand for sustainable energy.

HIF Global’s Vision and Government Support

On Tuesday, a delegation led by HIF Global’s senior advisor, Rajesh Khanna, presented the company’s ambitious plans at Lok Seva Bhawan. Addressing Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister KV Singh Deo, the team sought 50 acres of land and essential water and electricity provisions for the proposed project.

Khanna emphasized that HIF Global is prepared to invest by government policies. In response, Singh Deo welcomed the proposal, stating, “Odisha is now 100 per cent investment-friendly. We are ready to provide all kinds of facilities as per the government guidelines.”

    Economic and Environmental Impact

If realized, the project could significantly boost Odisha’s economy by generating employment for over 250 people during the operational phase and another 500 in the functional phase. The facility is expected to produce around 3.50 lakh tonnes of e-methanol annually, reducing carbon emissions by an impressive 95 per cent.

    The Science Behind Electro Fuel

Electro fuel is created through a synthesis process, where green hydrogen is combined with carbon dioxide. The resulting e-methanol is chemically similar to conventional fossil fuels and is fully compatible with existing engines and infrastructure. Electro fuel can serve as a direct shipping fuel or be further processed into e-gasoline for cars and aeroplanes, paving the way for a greener transportation industry.

Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Future

Principal Secretary, Energy Vishal Dev, IPICOL MD Bhupendra Singh Poonia, and senior officials from the Energy Department attended the meeting. With Odisha’s commitment to sustainable energy and HIF Global’s expertise in e-fuel production, the collaboration has the potential to position the state as a hub for green innovation and economic growth.
