Gujarat is now the top-performing state in India’s rooftop solar journey. This achievement comes under the central government’s flagship initiative – the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
The scheme was launched in February 2024. It aims to install rooftop solar panels in one crore Indian homes by the end of 2026-27. The scheme offers financial support and free electricity to encourage people to adopt clean energy.
3.36 Lakh Solar Systems and Counting
As of May 2025, Gujarat has installed over 3.36 lakh rooftop solar systems. This is the highest number among all Indian states. Gujarat alone contributes 34% of the total rooftop installations done under the scheme.
These solar panels have generated more than 1,232 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. That equals about 1,834 million units of electricity, which would otherwise have come from polluting sources.
Big Savings and Environmental Gains
Switching to rooftop solar is helping both people and the planet. Gujarat’s solar capacity has saved nearly 1,284 metric tonnes of coal. It has also prevented over 1,504 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The scheme offers up to ₹78,000 in subsidy per household. In Gujarat alone, over ₹2,362 crore has been disbursed in subsidies. Households also get up to 300 units of free electricity every month. The shift to solar energy in Gujarat has led to significant environmental benefits.
Easy Online Application
The government has made it easy for homeowners to join the solar revolution. People can apply through a dedicated website – pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The process is paperless and quick.
Other States Catching Up
While Gujarat is in the lead, other states are also making progress. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan follow closely in adoption numbers.
Gujarat’s leadership in rooftop solar shows how a state can take charge of its energy future. With the right policies, strong government backing, and public participation, clean energy can power every home in India.
