ABB reached a major milestone in January 2026 by shipping its first wind power converter produced in India. This was contrary to what happened in December 2025 when ABB acquired the power electronics business of Gamesa Electric, which reinforced its wind, solar, and integration technologies in addition to grid integration.
The converter has been manufactured in the ABB Nelamangala manufacturing plant near Bengaluru, which is a sign of the increasing contribution of India in the production of advanced renewable energy.
Enhancing India’s Renewable Manufacturing Ecosystem
The Nelamangala plant, which has already become a major center of electrifying ABB solutions of automation, is now located strategically in the wind power electronics. This shipment has made ABB domestically localize the manufacture of such critical wind turbine parts, eliminate reliance on importation, and enhance the resiliency of the supply chain.
This is why the step is in line with the Indian initiative to develop through the Make in India program and because the country has a vision of becoming a renewable energy manufacturing hub in the world.
Effects of Gamesa Electric Acquisition
When ABB acquired the power electronics division of Gamesa Electric, they acquired experience in wind power converters and highly advanced grid-forming inverters and systems of energy management. This has enabled ABB to utilize the best-tested wind technology and combine it with its worldwide manufacturing and research and development network.
Furthermore, the converter produced in India signals a strategy of ABB to produce at a higher scale with reference to high-growth renewable markets such as those in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa.
Strengthening Wind Energy Sources in India
By 2030, 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity is a target of India, and wind power is a key constituent of this. Thus, localized production of wind power converters optimizes the schedule of project completion and cost reduction, as well as accelerating the implementation of wind farms.
Also, the expansion of manufacturing by ABB leads to the creation of jobs, development of skills, and transfer of technology in the industry of clean energy in India.
Cementing the Indian Position in the World
Through this initial delivery, ABB has strengthened India as a reliable hub for the export of high-value renewable energy equipment.
Moreover, the milestone is an indication of increasing confidence in India by the companies across the globe in its manufacturing potential, infrastructure, and human resources.
With the growing rate of demand for renewable energy all over the world, the ABB facility at Nelamangala is supposed to be more relevant in providing wind power solutions for the upcoming generations from India to the global markets.
