    NTPC and Indian Army Collaborate on Solar Hydrogen Microgrid in Ladakh

    In a step toward sustainable energy, NTPC Limited has signed an agreement with the Indian Army for setting up a Solar Hydrogen-based Microgrid at Chushul in Ladakh. This will provide a stable year-round power supply to the off-grid Army locations using green hydrogen.

    Foundation Stone Laid by Defence Minister

    The foundation stone of this ambitious project was laid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 24, 2024, through video conferencing. The ceremony was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army.

    Design and Capacity of the Microgrid

    NTPC has designed a microgrid to operate off-grid, employing hydrogen as a storage element. The system will deliver a load of 200 kW continually throughout the year. This will help replace existing diesel generators at off-grid Army locations, ensuring a green power supply in the extreme winter months when temperatures can drop to -30°C at an altitude of 4,400 meters.

    Impact on the Energy Landscape in Ladakh

    With its high solar irradiance and low temperatures, Ladakh is the best place to set up green energy. This project will enable the generation and consumption of green energy, eliminating fuel logistics and increasing self-sufficiency at far-flung areas when road connectivity becomes a challenge. It will bring a new era in the decarbonization of the defense sector in the Himalayas once the project gets going.

    NTPC’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

    NTPC has a commitment to 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by the year 2032 and intends to be one of the key companies in green hydrogen technology and energy storage. The company has started to work on some initiatives pertaining to the decarbonization theme.

    This collaboration between NTPC and the Indian Army is a big step toward sustainable energy solutions in the defense sector of India, using innovative technologies to meet the energy needs of remote military outposts.
