Masdar has chosen Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the north side of an innovative solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi. The project is known as the first gigascale project in the world designed to deliver 24/7 renewable energy.

The ambitious project is bifurcated into two equal sites: north and south; each hosts a 2.6 GW solar PV installation, integrated with a 9.5 GWh battery energy storage system.Together, the project will give up to 1 GW of nonstop baseload power, catering to a sure and dependable supply of renewable energy around the clock.

    Key Collaboration

Created in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company, the venture supports Abu Dhabi’s vision to lead in economical energy solutions. With its unprecedented combination of utility-scale solar PV and massive battery storage, the initiative will attempt to set a new standard for large-scale renewable energy projects worldwide.

The choice of L&T as an EPC contractor is a reflection of its experience in the execution of large-scale renewable energy projects. It will, therefore, be responsible for the development of the north site, including design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the solar PV and battery storage elements.

    Implications for the Future

This project is a landmark in the journey toward sustainable energy and demonstrates that continuous renewable power generation is fully possible. As such, it will be an example for many subsequent projects to come with the same ambitions for the pursuit of energy security with minimal environmental footprint.

In sum, L&T’s participation in this flagship project underlines its commitment to the development of renewable energy infrastructure in line with Abu Dhabi’s vision for sustainable development.
