South Korea has declared an investment of 86.2 billion won ($59.3 million) in 2025 to develop advanced climate technologies. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Science and ICT, focuses on carbon-free energy, AI-driven climate prediction, and carbon neutrality solutions, underscoring the nation’s commitment to addressing climate change challenges.

    Major Investment Areas

The government’s funding will support key climate-related projects:

    • Carbon-Free Energy: A total of 5.7 billion won will be allocated to creating carbon-free energy technologies to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
    • Carbon Capture and Utilization: Another 4.3 billion won will focus on advancing technologies to capture and repurpose carbon emissions.
    • AI Climate Prediction Model: South Korea will fund 3.1 billion won in artificial intelligence-driven models to forecast climate disasters and minimize potential damage.
    • Global Collaboration: An additional 4.02 billion won will fund two international projects researching carbon neutrality solutions.

    10-Year Vision for Climate Resilience

This investment is part of a 10-year plan to enhance climate resilience through scientific advancements by 2032. South Korea has set ambitious goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from 2018 to 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Future Focus on Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Looking ahead, the government aims to prioritize the development of renewable energy technologies. This includes next-generation solar batteries, floating wind power systems, hydrogen energy technologies, and nuclear power systems. These innovations are critical for transitioning to a sustainable energy landscape.

The government will also analyze vulnerabilities in forests, marine ecosystems, and agricultural systems to devise strategies for stable food production and environmental sustainability.

“These investments reflect our commitment to building a sustainable future through innovation and technology. We are determined to lead global efforts in combating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality,” the ministry stated.

    Roadmap for Carbon Neutrality

South Korea’s presidential committee on carbon neutrality has created a comprehensive roadmap targeting six critical areas: wind power, energy storage, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability. This strategy aims to position the country as a global leader in climate action.

As the world faces increasing climate challenges, South Korea’s proactive approach signals its commitment to reducing emissions and building a greener, more resilient future for future generations.
