Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has also opened a 71 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power station at Prayagraj, which has been a major landmark in the transition of clean energy in India. This project was launched at the event known as India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, which cemented BPCL aspects of renewable energy and sustainability.

    Increase in Renewable Energy Capacity.

The new solar plant commissioned is likely to be considered as one of the largest renewable energy sources of BPCL to date and it has the capacity to produce approximately 140 million units of clean energy each year. A significant part of the conventional power consumption of BPCL will be compensated through this generation, which will aid in less reliance on fossil fuels and, consequently, improve energy security.

The officials of the company said the Prayagraj solar is expected to contribute to an approximate 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide pollution reduction per annum, which will help India meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The project is in line with the wider objective of India, which is to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel by 2030.

Strategic Alignment with the Net-Zero Vision of BPCL.

BPCL has given a target of achieving a net-zero energy company by 2040 of both Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The Solar plant in Prayagraj is one of the components of the BPCL strategy to incorporate renewable energy in refineries, terminals and infrastructure in general. The business is also making efforts in solar and wind, biofuels and green hydrogen and other energy conservation projects.Strategic Alignment with the Net-Zero Vision of BPCL.

    Local Economic and Social Impact.

Other than environmental advantages, the project has also helped the local people in terms of employment during the construction process and it is likely to aid the economic growth of the region. BPCL has also focused on following the environmental protection and land-use optimization to create minimum ecological footprint.

    India Energy Week 2026 Spotlight
The grand opening of the India Energy Week 2026 includes the increasing contributions of the public sector companies in the Indian clean energy agenda. The meeting united policymakers, leaders in the energy field as well as industry leaders to deliberate on the ways towards a safe, affordable and sustainable energy future.

After the Solar plant at Prayagraj was commissioned, BPCL would be adding to its renewable energy portfolio and assist in India moving towards a low-carbon economy.
