    S.M. Ramanathan to Drive R&D and Engineering at BHEL

    S.M. Ramanathan to Drive R&D and Engineering at BHEL

    Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) appointed S. M. Ramanathan as its new Director (Engineering, Research & Development) from 1 May 2025. This is a strategic appointment showing the desire of BHEL to enhance its engineering and R&D capabilities.

    A Seasoned Leader with Diverse Expertise

    Mr. Ramanathan brings over 37 years of extensive experience within BHEL, having commenced his career as an Engineer Trainee at the High Pressure Boiler Plant in Tiruchirappalli in 1988. His tenure at BHEL has encompassed a wide array of roles across engineering, design, R&D, strategic management, and various operational domains, including commercial, materials management, maintenance, production, and field engineering services. ​

    Prior to this elevation, he served as the Executive Director (OSD – E, R&D) at BHEL’s Corporate Office and also headed the company’s Heavy Electrical Plant in Bhopal.

    Academic and Professional Credentials

    Mr. Ramanathan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and a Master of Technology in Stress and Vibration Analysis. He is also a qualified Cost Accountant and a Fellow member of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India.

    Innovations in Hydro Turbine Design

    One of Mr. Ramanathan’s notable contributions includes the refinement and design of hydro turbines through the application of IT tools and mathematical techniques. These technology developments have also resulted in colossal cost and cycle time reductions, greatly increasing the competitiveness of BHEL in the power sector.

    Strategic Vision for R&D in BHEL

    As part of his new assignment, Mr. Ramanathan will be responsible to lead the engineering and R&D activities of BHEL, spearheading the development of new and innovative technologies and solutions to address evolving needs of the power sector. His leadership will be expected to drive innovation and efficiency and facilitate BHEL in fulfilling its vision of delivering sustainable and reliable energy solutions.

    Leveraging BHEL’s Legacy of Engineering Excellence

    BHEL, under Mr. Ramanathan’s chairmanship, would be able to leverage its ability to innovate even more, especially in key areas like green energy, advanced manufacturing, and next-generation power equipment.His vision is expected to push the envelope in areas such as digital design, predictive maintenance, and AI-driven systems integration—crucial for competing in a rapidly evolving global energy market.

    He is also expected to prioritize talent development within BHEL’s engineering and research teams. With a focus on nurturing young engineers and fostering a culture of innovation, Mr. Ramanathan aims to make BHEL a hub for advanced energy technology and indigenous solutions.
