Bihar is charging ahead on the green mobility highway, registering a remarkable 113% increase in electric vehicle (EV) registrations in the financial year 2024–25. This dramatic spike, from 10,850 EVs in 2023–24 to 23,096, marks a pivotal shift in the state’s transport preferences and environmental policy.
According to data from the Bihar Transport Department, the surge is driven largely by two-wheeler EVs, which accounted for 22,133 of the total registered electric vehicles. The state also witnessed a 175% spike in four-wheeler EV registrations, with 963 units logged compared to just 350 in the previous year.
State Transport Minister Sheela Kumari credited this growth to Bihar’s proactive push for clean mobility. “We are not just switching vehicles, we are transforming lifestyles. Our aim is to make Bihar a leader in sustainable transportation,” she noted.
The state’s comprehensive EV Policy 2023 is now bearing fruit beyond government corridors. Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agrawal said that electric cars, once confined to official use, are now being embraced by middle-class families, students, and rural users. “The running cost of EVs is nearly one-third that of petrol or diesel vehicles,” he pointed out.
Districts Leading the Charge
Patna led the tally with 5,633 new EV registrations, followed by Gaya (1,821), Muzaffarpur (1,696), and Motihari (1,401). Each district tells a unique story of EV adoption, whether it’s Gaya’s focus on green tourism or Samastipur’s growing reliance on e-scooters among students and farmers.
Infrastructure is evolving alongside. Charging stations are being installed under flyovers, at petrol pumps, and even in residential societies. Rural areas are setting up battery-swapping centers to match the urban momentum.
Powering the Future: Bihar’s EV Target for 2028
Looking ahead, the Bihar government aims to make 15% of all vehicle registrations electric by 2028. To meet this ambitious target, the administration is expanding charging infrastructure, offering incentives on power tariffs, and providing tax exemptions and grants through public-private partnerships.
As Bihar moves full throttle toward an electric future, the rise in EV adoption signals more than just cleaner roads, it’s a quiet revolution in the making, one silent motor at a time.
